Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made the right move by directing Ministers not to appoint family members as their staff. Do not promote your family is NaMo’s clear message.

This much needed mantra will go a long way to nip nepotism and ensure that merit is the sole criteria in all the appointments. This directive of the Prime Minister should be emulated by all State governments across the country as a step towards transparency and accountability leading to good governance. On 27th February last year Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar recommended the name of his relative Kurapati Dwarakanath Row for the all-important post of Chairman of Goa Public Service Commission.

Without considering any other name, the CM’s diktat was accepted by the government officials and the Cabinet on the very same day swiftly appointed the CM’s relative to that key post. Will Prime Minister Narendra Modi now pull by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for having acted so high-handedly in promoting the interest of his own kin?

In-fighting in Karnataka police

Sir, This is with reference to ‘Now, ADGP files complaint against top cop Auradkar’ (DH, May 30). The unsavoury developments involving two top Police officers of the State have the potential to produce a cascading effect.

This episode has already caused a lot of damage to the morale of the Police personnel, particularly among the lower cadre. It is in the best interest of the State in general and the Home department in particular to resolve issue in the best way possible before it escalates further.
