In the election held for the post of president and vice president of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat on Saturday, Asha Thimmappa Gowda and Sathish Kumpala were unanimously elected for the posts respectively.

As only one nomination was filed for each post, the need for voting did not arise.

Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi smoothly conducted the election process at the Zilla Panchayat hall.

On being elected as the President, Asha Thimmappa Gowda said that she would give priority to provide basic facilities, drinking water, conserving ground water table, maintaining sanitation.

“The party (BJP) has given me a major responsibility with this post. I will develop DK Zilla Panchayat as a model panchayat with the guidance of the standing committee presidents and members,” she said.

Sathish Kumpala who was elected as the Vice President said that though the zilla panchayat has been receiving enough grant for drinking water projects, the fund has not been utilised properly in the village level.

The officers are not taking initiatives for the effective tax collection in villages.

There is a need for the officials and elected representatives to work jointly to give an effective administration, he said.

Kumpala also expressed the need to work on the implementation of multi-village drinking water project, as he said the villages can not depend on bore wells and open wells for drinking water.

Outgoing president Koragappa Naik maintained that he was satisfied with the work he had done during his tenure.

“During my tenure, elections for urban local body, assembly and parliament were held. Despite the model code of conduct, we have implemented development projects in last one and a half year. National award was declared to the DK ZP for the effective implementation of Nirmal Bharatha Programme,” he said.
