The Karnataka High Court division bench on Monday questioned the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) whether it can see the saplings planted by it since 2011.

Hearing a suo motu petition on the indiscriminate felling of trees in the City, the division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice H G Ramesh questioned the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike over its claim on the saplings planted so far.

“Going by your claim, if 60 per cent of the saplings had survived, there should be eight lakh trees? Where are they? Can you show them?” the court asked.

When the counsel for the petitioners said that they were being looked after by the Forest and Horticulture Department, the bench said, “What happened to them and where are they now?”

When the BBMP failed to reply, the bench said that there was nothing to argue in the matter and if the BBMP was facing any financial problems, the same should be informed to the court.

The matter has been adjourned.
