Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was once again at the centre of a controversy over his “praiseworthy” remarks for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in an article for a foreign publication.

“Just as he (Modi) remade himself from a hate-figure into an avatar of modernity and progress, he is seeking to remake the BJP from a vehicle of Hindu chauvinism to a natural party of governance,” Tharoor wrote in the Huffington Post.

Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza on Thursday dubbed the views expressed by Tharoor as his personal and not that of the party.

Congress leader Manishankar Aiyar also slammed Tharoor for his remarks. “I am deeply offended and disappointed by Tharoor’s praise of Modi. I can’t believe that an intelligent man like Tharoor would say this,” he told a television channel.

Tharoor told a TV channel that he cannot be called a “Modi fan”. “No, afraid you can’t. I have been intrigued by the fact that the paraphrases of my piece I have seen in the Indian media looks like people don’t actually read every word and every nuance ,” he said.

Another Congress leader wondered how could Tharoor make such remarks without hearing the NDA government’s agenda which would outlined in the President’s address to the joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
