<p>At least half a dozen police personnel, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, were injured when undertrials attacked them inside the District Prison here on Sunday morning.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The trouble began when police arrived at the District Prison to shift two undertrials – Faizal and Thalath – from Mangalore to Dharwad. Both reportedly belong to the Ullal Target Group and the Ravi Poojary gang. <br /><br />When the duo resisted and others in the room joined them, the Commissioner of Police was informed. He, in turn, sent more police personnel including an ACP, three police inspectors and two police sub-inspectors, to shift the undertrials.<br /><br />When the police went inside the prison block, more than 35 to 40 prisoners attacked them with tumblers and chilli powder. The police, who were caught unawares, suffered injuries.<br /><br />One of the undertrials attacked ACP Tilakchandra and a KSRP constable with a broken piece of glass (of the TV screen). <br /><br />Three undertrials are said to have inflicted injuries on themselves with glass pieces, in protest against the shifting. While two of them have been discharged, one is undergoing treatment at the Wenlock Hospital.<br /><br />Urwa police inspector Ramachandra Maladevar and Kadri police inspector Raghava Padil, who suffered minor injuries, have been discharged. Maladevar said that one of the undertrials threw a TV stabiliser at him. More than half a dozen police personnel, at whom the undertrials threw chilli powder, were helpless as undertrials thrashed them, it is said.<br /><br />Commissioner of Police R Hithendra told Deccan Herald that the undertrials were finally shifted to Dharwad in the afternoon. <br /><br />When contacted, Prison Superintendent C S Ramesh said that there is a severe shortage of staff in the prison. <br /><br />“As per the rule, there should be one police person for every 10 undertrials. But in the Mangalore prison, each police person has to manage 100 to 150 undertrials.<br />The capacity of the Mangalore prison is 220, but as on date, the prison houses over 330 undertrials.<br /><br />Unlike other prisons where there are separate cells for rowdy elements, hardcore criminals and gangsters, the Mangalore prison houses all undertrials together.<br /><br />Additional Inspector General of Police P S Raja visited the prison late in the evening.<br /><br /></p>
