Erratic Astha romps to victory

Last Updated 10 June 2014, 17:02 IST

Pace-setter Astha Madan’s game went caput but so did the rest of the pack that allowed the teenager to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the IGU-NR Group Ladies and Junior Girls Golf Championship here on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old tumbled to a disastrous final-round eight-over 78 but with everyone else struggling to stitch a decent round, she still scored a three-shot victory after totalling 221 at the JWGC.

Favourite Aditi Ashok, who has appeared out of sorts over the last two weeks, finished second along with Vrishali Sinha while Amandeep Drall signed off fourth at 229. Aditi, however, pipped Vrishali for the Category A title.

Little did Astha realise what was in store for her when she birdied the fourth hole. She dropped a shot each on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes before reducing the damage with a birdie on the 10th.

Things then started going downhill on the back nine as she double-bogeyed twice and bogeyed thrice. That, however, didn’t stop her from romping home victorious.

Arshia Mahant won the Category B title while Pranavi S Urs wore Category C crown.Leading scores (after 54 holes): Ladies: 221: Astha Madan (73, 70, 78); 226: Aditi Ashok (73, 76, 77), Vrishali Sinha (76, 73, 77); 229: Amandeep Drall (74, 72, 83); 230: Millie Saroha (82, 72, 76).
