The power of healing

Last Updated 11 June 2014, 13:01 IST

The Tibetan Healing and Wellness Center in Koramangala, which is located opposite Jyoti Nivas College, is organising a ‘Medicine Buddha Meditation’ on June 13, from 7 pm to 8 pm, by Dr Jampa Yonten.

Tibetan medicine is one of the oldest traditional healing systems in the world and can be dated back 3,000 years.

It is practised in Tibet and in the  Himalayan regions around. It is called ‘Sowa Rigpa’, which means the science of healing. It is a holistic healing system that is based on Buddhist philosophy of compassion. For a Tibetan physician, practising compassion is compulsory and a regular spiritual practice.

According to Tibetan medicine, there are six basic qualities that make for a good physician.

These are intelligence, compassion, commitment, skill, diligence and moral values. Compassion is one of the most important qualities.

A doctor has to go through deep spiritual practices such as meditation, chanting, prostrating, debating etc to become an eminent physician.

In Tibet, in order to become a great physician, it takes 20 to 30 years, that is until the teacher feels confident about the disciple.

While observing the patient, the physician sees the patient as himself, happy and healthy. After understanding the patient’s pain and suffering, the physician generates love and care for him or her.

The physician then visualises the patient as one’s own mother and does not discriminate anyone on the basis of colour, age, wealth or race.

Thereafter limitless equanimity is generated.  One of the most important approaches of the Tibetan healing system is setting up positive intention to free all sentient beings from sufferings.

This month is the fourth lunar month, according to Tibetan astrology, and is called ‘Saga Dawa’ in Tibetan.  It is an auspicious and holy month. Buddha was born, enlightened and got ‘parinirvana’ on the full moon day, which is June 13.  The ‘Medicine Buddha Meditation’ is open to all  and no entry fee is charged.  For details, call 25521135 /  9845194369.
