'Identify land for residential schools in two months'

The State government has set a deadline of two months for officials of the Social Welfare Department to identify government or private land for construction of government-run residential schools.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore, Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya said that of the 545 Morarji Desai and Kittur Rani Chennamma residential schools, as many as 261 have been housed in rented buildings.

Anjaneya said officials have been instructed to identify land in their respective districts within two months. The land would be utilised to provide permanent buildings for residential schools, he said.

The minister said officials would be suspended if they failed to identify land. Replying to a question, Anjaneya said the government would appoint the chairman for the permanent backward classes commission within a month.
