Tree falls on police van; constable hurt

Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds on Friday evening left a police head constable injured, several trees uprooted and power supply disrupted in many areas across the City.

The City till 5.30 pm received 2.2 mm of rainfall, while the international airport recorded no rainfall. The maximum temperature was recorded at 37.7 degrees Celsius and the maximum wind speed was recorded at 51 kmph at 5.20 pm from northwesterly direction.

Head constable Shanthappa from Raichur was injured after a tree crashed on the police van on the High Court premises. He had come to the City along with the senior police officers to produce an accused in the court. Shanthappa was rushed to a nearby hospital and is said to be out of danger. 

Trees were uprooted in Banashankari 2nd Stage, near TV Tower in Jayamahal, Madhavanagar, Gangamma Temple Road in Malleswaram, Mathikere, Adugodi Police Quarters and Shekhar Netralaya near Dalmia Signal. No major traffic jams were reported as the trees on the stretches were cleared immediately, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials said.  

Power supply was interrupted in a few areas and the Bescom received 3,072 calls from 5 pm to 8 pm on Friday. The officials said around 10 electricity poles were broken. 

General Manager (Customer Relations),  Bescom, N Jayanthi, told Deccan Herald: “Due to uprooting of a coconut tree at N8 sub-division, Nagarabhavi Keggunte, nine poles of LT line were broken. Around 50 houses were affected. Similarly, uprooting of a huge tree at N6 sub-division, Sunkadakatte area, led to disruption in power supply for 20 houses.”
