'Students-scientists interaction programme' from December 16

400 students from PUC and high school are expected to take part.

Addressing the reporters on Tuesday, Zilla Panchayat CEO Shivashankar informed that the programme will be inaugurated by Yenepoya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Syed Akheel Ahmed while NITK Director Prof Sandeep Sancheti will preside.

He said that over 400 students from PUC and high school are expected to take part in the programme wherein renowned scientists from various parts of the state will present papers on various topics. The students will later hold interaction programme with the scientists on the topics on, which the scientists presented talks.

He said that the programme has been shaped by renowned scientist and PM’s Scientific Advisory Board Chairman Prof C N R Rao, with an aim of helping students develop scientific temperament and motivating them to take up applied sciences as their stream of studies.

Presentations
Yenepoya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Syed Akheel Ahmed will deliver a talk on ‘basic concepts of science’, Dr Harish Bhat from Bharathiya Vijnana Mandir will talk on ‘weather changes and bio-diversity’, Dr Yogananda P S  from S J Engineering College will talk on ‘Mathematics in daily life’, Dr Mudakavi J R from Bharathiya Vijnana Mandir will talk on ‘environment pollution’ and Dr Nithyananda Shetty from NITK will speak on ‘wonders of science’

‘Akashadatta ondu nota’ programme will be held by Dr Jayanth from St Agnes College wherein students will be facilitated to watch celestial bodies, in case the weather is favourable.
NITK Director Prof Sandeep Sancheti said that about 25 students on the basis of their performance and participation in the programme will be selected to represent the district at the National Science Day celebration to be held in Bangalore on February 28, 2010. These students will meet Prof C N R Rao himself.

Prof Sancheti said that NITK will prepare an abstract of interesting projects of NITK for the students participating in SSIP. Further, he said that NITK will organise a programme called ‘Inspire’ from December 20 to January 2 with the same aim of popularising science and developing scientific bent of mind among students.
Regional Science Centre Director Prof K V Rao and others were present.
The valedictory programme will be held on December 17, at 4 pm wherein Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj will be the chief guest and Prof Sandeep Sancheti will preside.
