International air traffic came to a standstill at Chennai airport for more than five hours on Monday morning due to power cut.

Airport sources said that power supply was cut suddenly at midnight at the Anna international terminal where several planes were scheduled for departure.

Though power supply was restored within a few minutes, low voltage at the international terminal delayed the departure of more than 10 flights which was in turn caused by the delay in shifting the baggages to the aircraft.

Respective airline officials put extra staff, who took the baggages of the passengers to the aircraft.

Since several international flights would depart around midnight, there was a heavy rush at the airport and passengers had to use the stairs to reach their respective gates to board the aircraft.

The departure of several flights, including the Malaysian Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur, Lufthansa Airlines to Frankfurt, Cathay Pacific flight to Hong Kong, were delayed.

Though several flights arrived on time, airport authorities had to manually transport the baggages from the aircraft to the airport, resulting in delay.
