Heavy rain in Malnad region, U-K dist

Heavy rain lashed many parts of Malnad region and Uttara Kannada district on Thursday, while it drizzled in many districts of north and south Karnataka.

The Sakleshpur taluk in Hassan district has received copious rainfall from Wednesday afternoon till Thursday evening, albeit intermittently. Following the downpour, inflow has increased in River Hemavathi, lifeline of Hassan and Tumkur districts.

The villages on the foothills of Western Ghats— Devalakere, Kumaralli, Neekanahalli, Achchanahalli, Han- ubalu, Byakaravalli, Athihalli, Hongadahalla and surrounding villages in the taluk have received 200 mm of rainfall. 

The villages in and around Sakleshpur town have received 120 mm of rainfall.In  Sirsi taluk of the Uttara Kannada district, the rainfall which began on Wednesday lasted till 8 am on Thursday. In the 24-hour span the taluk had received 115 mm of rainfall. Karwar taluk too received heavy rainfall. The rainfall elsewhere in the district was normal.

Seawater flooded several houses and agricultural land at Herekeri village in Hebale gram panchayat in Bhatkal taluk of the district on Wednesday night, destroying goods and crops worth lakhs of rupees. Though the rainfall was normal, the sea was rough and the pounding waves flooded coconut grove and cultivated land. Many houses were also inundated.

Several parts of Shimoga district received moderate to heavy rainfall. In the last 24 hours, Hosanagar received the highest rainfall of 80.4 mm followed by Thirthahalli-49.8mm, Sorab-38.0mm, Sagar-22.4mm, Shimoga-7.2mm, Bhadravathi-5.4mm and Shikaripur-1.0mm. Most parts of the district also witnessed intermittent rain till Thursday evening. Many districts in North Karnataka received rainfall on Thursday. The districts where it drizzled are Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Haveri, Dharwad and Gagad.
