The High Court or Karnataka on Wednesday stayed the government notification providing for reserving eight per cent of medical seats to students from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

JSS University has filed a petition challenging the Karnataka Educational Institutions (Regulations of Admission in the Hyderabad-Karnataka Region) Order, 2013, which provides for reservation of 70 per cent of the available seats in Hyderabad-Karnataka region and eight per cent of seats in the institutions across the State.

The petitioner had contended it cannot reserve eight per cent of the seats for students from H-K region since it was a deemed university governed under the University Grants Commission Act.

It had claimed that the varsity allots seats on the basis of the scores in All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Test and hence reserving eight pc seats for H-K students will hamper the admission process.

A division bench comprising Justices K L Manjunath and Malimath stayed the government notification.
