A debt-ridden man hacked his two daughters to death at his house in Tunganagar in Tavarekere police station limits on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Monica (5) and her sister Monisha (10).

Their elder brother Dharani (13), who was injured in the incident, is battling for life at a hospital.

According to police, Ramesh (45), a native of Tamil Nadu, had borrowed money from a private finance firm for purchasing an autorickshaw.

Since he failed to repay the loan, the finance firm seized the vehicle. He later joined a factory in the Sunkadakatte Industrial Estate.

Ramesh was married to Gowramma for 15 years and the couple had three children. Ramesh is said to have borrowed money from private persons to fund his vices. Gowramma works as a domestic help.

Police said that a person had come to Ramesh’s house on Monday evening demanding repayment of money he (Ramesh) had borrowed.

After sending him, Ramesh beat up his three children who were playing outside the house.

He took all the three into the house, looked them up in a room and attacked them with a machete.

As the children screamed for help, Ramesh fled the house, bolting the front door from outside.

Neighbours who heard the children’s cries rushed to Ramesh’s house by which time Monika and Monisha were dead.

The neighbours chased Ramesh who managed to escape.

Ramesh attempted to kill himself by hitting his head with a stone and hid himself in a drain near his house.

Upon information, police rushed to the spot and shifted a grievously injured Dharani to hospital and arrested Ramesh.

Tavarekere police have registered a case.
