A traffic sub-inspector in the City is on the run after a Delhi court ordered criminal prosecution against him for raping and cheating a model who worked as a bartender in a popular pub on MG Road.

A team of policemen from Malviya Nagar, Delhi, landed here on Wednesday with an arrest warrant against B Dhananjay, a sub-inspector attached to the Cubbon traffic police station.

The 28-year-old victim had come to Bangalore a few years ago and was working as a bartender in one of the popular pubs on MG Road.

Dhananjay had met her some years ago during the investigation of a case. She told him that she was a model but was forced to work in the pub, said a senior police officer who did not wish to be named.

From then on, the two started meeting regularly and developed a relationship. They started living together in a rented house.

Things went smoothly until recently, when the victim realised that Dhananjay was married, even though he had told her otherwise. Upset over this, she confronted him and the two had a heated argument.

The victim recently left for Delhi and filed a private complaint against Dhananjay at a court which directed the Malviya Nagar police to register a case and investigate the matter.

The police have filed a complaint under sections 420 (cheating) and 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC, and obtained an arrest warrant against Dhananjay, the officer added.

But Dhananjay, who was quick enough to get a tip-off about his possible arrest, has now reportedly gone into hiding.

A senior police officer said: “The search is on to trace Dhananjay and all possible efforts are being made to make sure he is handed over to the Delhi police. We will co-operate with the Delhi police in every way.”

The sources said that Dhananjay was attached to the Indiranagar police station before he was transferred to the Cubbon Park traffic police station about 15 days ago, but he is yet to report to his posting.

Dhananjay had shot to fame recently by busting an international credit and debit card scam during his stint at the Indiranagar police station.
