1.68 lakh dropouts in State

There are over 1.68 lakh dropouts in State, Minister for State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar said while admitting there were mistakes in the calculations of dropouts between the academic years 2011 and 2014.

The government, he said, is trying to reduce the dropout rates by trying to track these children and reaching out to their parents through local Block Level Officers or labour officers in various districts where they may have moved to in search of jobs.

“The efforts are on. The biggest challenge being migration of parents which has led to dropping out of children from various levels of schooling,” he told the House.

Meanwhile, quoting a study conducted by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA) in 2012-13, Ratnakar said that apart from migration there were several other reasons like students taking care of their siblings, dropping out due to pressure at home to work and earning for families etc.

He said the lure of private schools was another reason for a high dropout rate.
