Principal quits after stray dogs attack girl at school

The principal and the vice principal of Vadodara based Bharatiya Vidya Bhavans Public school resigned following protests by parents over mauling of a class two student by stray dogs inside the campus on Thursday morning.

Mehnaz Jamali, 7, was taken to the hospital for treatment to several bite and scrape wounds she suffered during the attack.

The incident occurred when the girl was moving between classrooms, when the dogs pounced on her. Mehnaz fell to the ground and the dogs attacked her severely before she could be rescued from them.

Parents claim that they had complained to the school authorities about the dog menace several times, but only received the response that the school had complained to the civic body and cannot do anything on its own.  Mehnaz's father Musaid Jamali said his daughter was bitten at several places and had multiple injuries.

He added that Mehnaz was the second student to emerge from the classroom and another student getting out before her also fell victim to the animals’ ferocity.  He said the dogs have been moving around the campus for quite some time.

Protesting parents feel that the resignation of the principal would not solve the problem and the school should take some concrete steps to address the stray dog menace.
