A 50-year-old jeweller at east Delhi’s Dilshad Garden was shot at by motorcycle-borne men on Thursday night.

Preliminary investigations showed that it was not a robbery attempt as no jewellery was found to be missing, a police officer said.

The jeweller was rushed to GTB Hospital and then taken by his family members to a private hospital where his condition is stable following a surgery.

A case of attempt to murder has been registered.

The attack took place when B Susheel, owner of SNG Jewellers in Dilshad Garden, was returning home in his car from his shop on Thursday night.

The officer said people questioned so far have revealed that there were four assailants on two motorcycles.

Just as the victim’s car took a turn on a street close to his shop, two men on one motorcycle pretended to have an accident right in front of the vehicle.

Just as Susheel got off the car to help them, two others on another motorcycle pulled up in front of him and shot him in the stomach. The four then fled as locals gathered there on hearing the gunshot. Police were informed and Susheel was taken to GTB Hospital.

His family members then took him to Max Hospital but the non-availability of a bed there forced them to shift him to Pushpanjali Hospital in Vaishali.

The bullet had pierced his liver but was been removed during surgery, Susheel’s brother-in-law Santosh told Deccan Herald.

Police scanned the CCTV footage of the spot where the shooting took place, but they have obtained nothing from it yet. The victim is currently in ICU and police said they could get the exact sequence of events only after he is in a condition to speak.

Santosh said Susheel generally goes and comes back to the shop alone. “If robbery was their motive, they should have attacked before he had closed his shop,” he said. The family has told police they were not aware of Susheel’s enmity with anyone.
