Speaker slams Cong MPs for LS disruptions

Last Updated 01 August 2014, 20:25 IST

Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Friday pulled up Congress members for causing repeated disruptions in the Lok Sabha demanding clarification on the statement by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on a landslide near Pune.

“If you want to make suggestions every now and then, then elect a new Speaker or occupy this chair. This is not the way. I am sorry,” Mahajan said, ticking off Congress members for demanding a clarification on the minister’s statement, which is not permitted as per the Rules of Procedure in the Lok Sabha.

As soon as Singh read out his statement on the Pune landslide, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge was up on his feet seeking a clarification from the minister. The Speaker disallowed Kharge citing the rules and moved on to the next item on the agenda.

However, Congress members Jyotiraditya Scindia, Deepender Hooda, Rajiv Satav, Ranjeet Ranjan, Gaurav Gogi trooped into the Well of the House insisting on a clarification from the minister and raising slogans against the Modi government.“Khargeji, you are well aware of the rules.

Please see Rule 372. I will read it out if you so wish – A statement may be made by a minister on a matter of public importance with the consent of the Speaker but no question shall be asked at the time the statement is made,” Mahajan said.
