A Delhi University student from Manipur allegedly killed his roommate from the same state in a drunken brawl. The accused then walked over to the police station and surrendered.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Gulmin Lal Haokip. His roommate and the alleged murderer Thangboilan Haokip is also a DU student but studied in a different college.

The two stayed together at rented accommodation in Christian Colony of north Delhi’s Maurice Nagar.

“The two were drinking late on Saturday when the brawl took place,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

They were discussing an issue which soon turned into a heated argument and a violent confrontation took place between them.

Suddenly, Thangboilan seized a kitchen knife and stabbed Gulmin. He then allegedly used a data cable to suffocate Gulmin to death.

“After strangling him, the youth slit his throat with the knife,” said the officer.
“Thangboilan then locked the house and went to visit Gulmin’s brother who lived in another flat in the same locality. He told him about the scuffle and the subsequent murder,” the officer said.

Thangboilan and Gulmin’s brother returned to the flat in which the murder had taken place.

An attempt was first made to revive the victim but when that failed, the two then walked over to the nearby Maurice Nagar police station.

The accused narrated the incident to police who then rushed Gulmin to the Sushruta trauma centre but he was declared brought dead.

Police said Thangboilan was heavily drunk when he arrived at the police station.

Arrested next morning

“He realised properly what he had done only the next morning,” said the officer.
He was kept in the lockup for the night while police proceeded to file a murder case against him. He was arrested on Sunday morning.
