Almost a week into the month of September, admissions to postgraduate courses for the first year in the University of Mysore (UoM) is yet to begin.

While the delay in admission is affecting freshers, the delay in announcing results has affected students, who have completed their fourth semester.

University authorities said, the ‘small delay’ is a result of the varsity changing the outsourcing agency that dealt with the results.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, several professors of the varsity, under condition of anonymity, said, such a delay would adversely affect the students, with larger implications on their career.

They feel such a delay was unprecedented in the recent history of the varsity.

“Only Bangalore University was notorious for delay in starting classes.

Considering the pace of admissions at UoM, there will be at least two months’ delay in commencing classes for first semester students,” they said.

While classes for first semester students are expected to begin in the first week of October, classes for first semester students of Mangalore University began during the first week of August.

Moreover, the recent goof up, in which the varsity announced erroneous results of PGCET has also contributed to the delay in admissions.

Results

Due to the delay in announcing results of fourth semester students, many are losing opportunities to opt for higher studies, one of the senior professors said. “For a few entrance examinations, marks cards of all four semesters are required.

With the varsity yet to announce their results, they have not been able to apply for some of the exams. If the results are delayed further, they will not be able to take entrance examinations scheduled in the month of September. The delay will also affect them in landing jobs. Some of them will definitely lose a year,” a senior professor said.

It can be noted that examinations for second and fourth semester students was held in the month of June.

Vice-Chancellor K S Rangappa attributed the delay to “change in examination pattern” and the “software company that announced the results”.

“This is the first time such a delay has occurred in the varsity. The software company, which announces the results had to face some technical difficulties as examination pattern was changed by the varsity. Now, the results of all departments have been announced. However, marks cards are yet to be issued,” he said.

Meta-I was the firm entrusted with the responsibility of announcing results during the last academic year, but, the varsity recently changed the outsourcing agency to IEM, a software firm based in Mumbai.

On the delay in starting classes for first semester, Rangappa said, the admission process would commence shortly. “We will start classes from the first week of October,” he said.
