SC dismisses State's plea on language policy

Last Updated 11 September 2014, 21:03 IST

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition filed by the Karnataka government seeking a review of its verdict on the medium of instruction in primary schools.

A Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice R M Lodha dismissed the review petition filed by the State government.

The Karnataka government had filed the petition before the court seeking the review of the decision of the Supreme Court, which quashed the state government’s 1994 language policy making mother tongue or Kannada the compulsory medium of instruction in primary schools.

The court had held that the government “cannot impose” mother tongue on linguistic minorities for imparting primary education and the decision on the medium of instruction should be left to children’s parents.
