A 20-year-old woman was set ablaze by her husband over a quarrel on Saturday at the couple’s home in Swathantra Palya under KR Puram police station limits. The accused was arrested at the Victoria Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The accused, Chinappa, a daily wage labourer, had come home drunk on Saturday and picked up an argument with his wife, Kavitha. Then, in a fit of rage, he poured kerosene over her and set her on fire.

Hearing Kavitha’s screams, neighbours rushed to the couple’s house and tried to douse the fire with the help of a blanket and gunny bags.

Then they rushed the woman to the Victoria Hospital while her husband, who also suffered minor injuries on his hand and leg, fled the spot, the police said.

Kavitha is in a critical condition as she has suffered 60 per cent burns, the police added. “Chances of her survival are slim,” doctors told the police.

Kavitha gave a statement to the police. She said that her husband used to abuse her frequently and come home drunk.

Police received a tip-off that Chinnappa had come to the hospital to see his wife on Tuesday. They rushed there and arrested him. A case has been registered at the KR Puram police station.
