A 56-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her son-in-law at her house in south-west Delhi’s Sagarpur on Monday.

The accused also stabbed his wife and two brothers-in-law, who are fighting for their lives in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, police said.

The incident took place around 4 pm after a heated argument between 35-year-old Bhupender Tanwar with his wife Poonam.

Bhupender is unemployed and used to work as a bouncer with a night club in south Delhi.
“Bhupender attacked Poonam and three of her family members with a knife and fled from the spot. Poonam’s mother was declared brought dead at DDU Hospital,” said Suman Goyal, Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police (South West). Bhupender remained at large till late Monday.

Bhupender and Poonam married around 12 years ago, and Poonam alleged that he used to harass her over petty issues.

Recently, she left Bhupender’s house and started staying with her family in Sagarpur.
On Monday, Bhupender went to his in-law's house and tried to force Poonam to return home.

It is alleged that he abused Poonam and became violent when she refused to return home.
Hearing the commotion, Poonam’s bothers Ankur, 22, and Pankaj, 30, intervened.
Her mother Kaushalya also tried to bring the situation under control, but Bhupender attacked them with a knife he was carrying.

“All of them sustained multiple stab wounds,” a police officer added. After Bhupender left the home, Pankaj somehow managed to make a call to the police control room.

A team of local police took them to DDU Hospital, where Kaushalya was declared brought dead. Pankaj’s condition is stated to be out of danger.

“Poonam and Ankur underwent operation and their condition is stated to be critical,” Goyal added.

A case of murder and attempt to murder under Indian Penal Code has been registered on the statement of Pankaj with Sagarpur police station.

In his statement to police, Pankaj claimed that Bhupender and Poonam used to argue over minor issues.

As Bhupender was unemployed these days, the family was facing a financial crunch which was another reason for arguments between the couple.

“Poonam used to visit her family after these arguments, which was regularly objected by Bhupender. As he was carrying a knife, we suspect that Bhupender had planned to attack Poonam and her family members,” the officer said.
