The High Court of Karnataka on Friday directed the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (Credai) to designate its officers in all the districts of the State for coordinating with the Labour department to facilitate implementation of welfare measures of the Construction Workers Welfare Board.

During the hearing of a suo motu petition, a division bench comprising Chief Justice D H Waghela and Justice R B Budihal directed Credai to create a database of construction workers across the State.  “You should share the data with the welfare board and help them register the workers 100 percent,” the bench said.

It asked the association to find out the number of persons required for implementation of the welfare schemes of the board. The government should pass the information to the Labour department, the court noted.

The bench also said that Credai can also supervise disbursement of funds and identify NGOs and business houses to work with it. “We need people to work on implementation of welfare schemes,” the bench said and directed the State government to fill up all the vacancies in the Labour department.

The court has taken up the petition following complaints about non-utilisation of funds collected for the welfare of construction workers. The matter has been adjourned.
