The white canes sponsored by the Red Cross Society were given to visually challenged people from 14 to 65 years.

Although the association expected 300 visually challenged persons from all over the State to attend the function and receive the canes only people from only eight districts turned up. The maximum participation was from Bangalore Urban and Rural Districts apart from from Kolar, Chikkabhallapur, Ramnagara, Tumkur, Mysore, Mandya, Hassan and Gadag districts. The white canes were distributed to mark World Disabled Day, which falls on December 3. Explaining the reason for the delayed celebration, Murthy said that the delivery of white canes were delayed.

Meanwhile, Dr B L S Murthy, managing trustee of Lion’s Eye Hospital, and chief guest at the event assured support to the Association for running mobility training programme. “There will be some people whose vision cannot be restored. So we register them with us and teach them daily living skills. We also provide an orientation programme to family members of the person,” Murthy said.
