Northeast monsoon to hit in next 48 hrs

City receiving rainfall under an easterly wave

Bangaloreans were greeted by pleasant, cool showers on Friday afternoon. This, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, is because the Northeast Monsoon (NEM) is setting in and is expected to bring rains in the next 48 hours.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, IMD Bangalore Director B Puttanna said: “The rainfall Bangalore experienced on Friday is because the NEM is setting in. Most parts of Tamil Nadu are already experiencing heavy rainfall. The normal date for the onset of the NEM is October 20.

Also, there is a trough of low pressure area over southwest Bay of Sri Lanka and south Tamil Nadu coast. Under the influence of this easterly wave, the City is getting rainfall.”

More rains likely

Last year, the NEM was bad. This year the Southwest Monsoon (SWM) has been good. So, it is likely that Bangalore can expect good NEM rainfall.

The NEM is from October to December and the normal rainfall forecast is 209.5mm. The temperature has also started reducing because of the easterly winds prevailing.

Lighter showers

Puttanna said that unlike the last few days when Bangalore experienced heavy downpour, the showers will not be very high.

The City will experience rainfall during evenings, night and early morning hours. Under the NEM, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and some parts of south interior Karnataka- Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Mysore, Kolar Chikkaballapur and surrounding areas will get moderate rainfall.
