Ahead of the onset of the Northeast monsoon, heavy rain lashed the city and other parts of the state since Friday afternoon as a trough of low pressure has formed in Bay of Bengal.

“The Southwest monsoon is retreating from Telangana and north interior Karnataka and conditions are favourable for it further withdrawing from the remaining parts of the region during he next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, conditions are becoming favorable for the commencement of the Northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka,” a senior official of the Regional Meteorological Centre told Deccan Herald.

However, weathermen said it was pre-monsoon rainfall and the onset of northeast monsoon would be declared officially in the next couple of days. He said October to December is referred to as northeast monsoon season over the region. Earlier, this period was also referred to as the post-monsoon season or the retreating southwest monsoon season.
