EC ready for fresh Delhi elections

Last Updated 25 October 2014, 20:27 IST

The Election Commission’s decision to hold by-polls in three Assembly constituencies of Delhi may lead to dissolution of the Assembly. The commission has shown its readiness to hold elections if asked to do so.

Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampat said that the commission waited for a decision on dissolution of the Assembly. It is no longer possible to wait as the commission is mandated to hold elections within six months after a seat falls vacant.

Election Commissioner Brahma clarified while interacting with reporters that if the Supreme Court or the Lt Governor of Delhi asks us to hold elections, we will do so.

The commission seems prepared to withdraw the notification for by-polls if the Supreme Court or the Lt Governor dissolves the Delhi Assembly. In that case, fresh Assembly elections in Delhi will be held in one of the five-phases.
