Motorcycle-borne youths fired at two policemen in east Delhi on Thursday after they were stopped for rash driving.

The bullets, however, missed the policemen who managed to nab one of the three from the spot.

One of his accomplices who was not a part of Thursday’s assault was arrested later that day. Police said that the two arrests have resulted in solving of 31 criminal cases such as murder, attempt to murder and robbery in east and northeast districts of Delhi.

The two policemen escaped with minor injuries sustained while trying to nab the accused, police said.

Head constable Satender and constable Sanchit were near a railway crossing in east Delhi’s Nand Nagri when they noticed three youths rashly riding a motorcycle.

“The policemen signaled the motorcycle to stop, but they chose to flee. One of the policemen caught hold of the last pillion rider because of which the motorcycle fell,” said a senior police officer.

Immediately, that pillion rider pulled out a country-made pistol and fired at Satender but the bullet missed its mark. Police said Satender recovered quickly from the attack and caught hold of the assailant before he could fire again. The other two suspects managed to escape though.

The motorcycle left behind by them was seized. The pistol was found to be an automatic one. Two cartridges too were found fitted in the pistol.

The nabbed accused was identified as Muzammil Qureshi. He revealed the identities of his accomplices.

While they continue to be on the run, police nabbed Qureshi’s another accomplice Ahmed Hussain, 25, from New Mustafabad.

While Qureshi was found involved in 31 criminal cases, Hussain is a suspect in seven cases, including some in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

Police found that this gang would allegedly survey the targets and the crime spots well before executing their robbery plans.
