A 25-year-old man was battered to death by two unidentified men in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri on Monday. The victim’s head was also crushed with a stone to hide the identity, police said.

Police denied any link of the murder with the three-day communal clashes reported in the area last month.

The victim was identified as Bunty with the help of a tattoo on his arm. Police said the incident was reported around 5 am.

“Eyewitnesses saw two men attacking Bunty. He was heard begging for his life and that he would return money to the attackers,” said a police officer.
Initially, none of the locals went forward to help Bunty.

After a while, a woman named Shivani heard loud screams and then found a body in a drain. She made a call to the police control room.
“The man was declared dead on the spot and his face was crushed beyond recognition,” the officer added.

The body was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital after a crime and forensic team inspected the spot.

During enquiry, Bunty’s mother Rajni claimed that he had not returned home since early morning.

Rajni was taken to Mayur Vihar police station where she identified the body with the help of photographs.

“Photographs of a tattoo on Bunty’s right arm was shown to her,” the officer said.
Rajni told police that Bunty was her only son who was married and had two children.
On being questioned, she denied being aware of Bunty having any personal enmity.
Police said Bunty used to work in malls in the area, but was currently unemployed.
Police have analysed the call data records of Bunty’s mobile phone to identify the attackers.

“No arrest has been made so far,” the officer added.
A case of murder has been filed with Mayur Vihar police station.
After an initial probe, it is suspected that Bunty had borrowed money from friends and failed to return it on time due to unemployment.
