'Centre tried to hike power tariff after polls'

Last Updated 24 November 2014, 02:56 IST

Threatening to launch a massive agitation against inflated power and water bills, the Delhi Congress alleged on Sunday said that there was a move by the BJP-led central government to increase the power tariff by 14 per  cent after the Delhi Assembly elections.

Former MP Sajjan Kumar and chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma, slamming the BJP, said people living in the unauthorised and resettlement colonies were being forced to increase their electricity load capacity by the private power companies which were thereby collecting Rs 1,000 crore in an illegal manner.

The Congress demanded a probe into the alleged scam. Thousands of people participated in the “Pardafash Rally” held at the Budh Bazaar Road in Mohan Garden in West Delhi.

Sharma criticised the BJP and said the poor people were so fed up with the steep increase in the water bills that they are being forced to borrow money from lenders at huge interest rate to pay their dues.
