Last Updated 27 November 2014, 21:51 IST

Those who have passion towards photography should learn techniques first, else photography would become just a medium to show the object in front of the camera, opined surgeon and eminent photographer Dr Krishna Mohan.

Speaking after inaugurating ‘f stop’, an exhibition of photography by Karunakar Kanangi, at Mahalasa School of Art, Art Gallery here on Wednesday, he wondered though photography and painting are similar kind of art forms, it took so long for the photography to get the status of art form. However, the photographer should know the skills of converting an object into an art, otherwise photo would become just documentation, he added.

Photographer Karunakar Kanangi opined that learning art has become a lot easier in modern days. Earlier, artists had to remember the subject, but now they can click a photo using mobile phone. Artists can give brush effects using computers. Even photography has changed with the arrival of user friendly cameras. “Respect teachers, be happy about present and work hard for the future,” he advised students.

Principal Purushotham Nayak said that photography was reserved for journalists and artists didn’t have much knowledge about the art. Now, it is taken as a subject in Mahalasa School of Art, which is the only school in coastal districts to get recognition from the State government. For photography along with the technical knowledge, one should know about light and shadow combination, he said.

Dr Krishna Mohan and Karunakar Kanangi were felicitated on the occasion. A special lecture was delivered by Dr Krishna Mohan afternoon.
