Vice-chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (Ignou) M Aslam on Friday went on a long leave days after the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry set up a committee to look into the allegations of irregularities during his term at the varsity.
The varsity’s pro-vice-chancellor Nageshwar Rao took charge as Aslam went on leave on Friday afternoon.
Though it was not clear if the HRD ministry gave any formal directive to Aslam, sources said he was first asked to go on leave last week and was again reminded on Friday.
Aslam had been in controversy, facing charges of irregularity and corruption, since the day he took over as the vice-chancellor (VC) of the varsity. He has been accused of committing irregularities in faculty appointments and various decisions during his term, including scrapping the community college scheme.
