Refund fee: Consumer court to school

Last Updated 28 November 2014, 22:01 IST

The Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered New Horizon Public School, Indiranagar to refund the fee collected toward the
admission for LKG from a parent.

The court, in its order dated November 20, has ordered the school to refund the fee of Rs 98,975 within 30 days from the date of receipt of the order, failing which the school will have to pay the said amount along with an interest of 6 per cent per annum from the date of filing of complaint till the date of realisation.

Suryanarayanan Nagarajan, the parent, had moved the court after the school refused to refund the fee when he withdrew the admission of his daughter. The parent had paid the amount in January and decided to withdraw admission in March, much before the commencement of the academic year in June. The parent tried to contact the school through emails and had spoken to a school official. The official informed him that the fee cannot be refunded.

However, Mohan Manghnani, chairman of New Horizon Group of Institutions, said that he has not received any intimation or notice from any court and that there were no documents pertaining to the child’s admission in their records.

“We run many institutions. We do have refund policies provided conditions are met. How can I respond when I have not received any intimation from court?” said Manghnani.
