Cops look at similarities in Delhi and Gurgaon heists, detain five

Last Updated 01 December 2014, 02:56 IST

The two robbers who successfully executed a daring murder-cum-robbery in north Delhi’s Kamla Nagar on Saturday could be the same people who committed a similar robbery from a cash van in Gurgaon last Wednesday.

Investigators told Deccan Herald that but for the number of men involved in the two robberies, there were stark similarities in the two incidents.

If they were indeed the same robbers, they must have downgraded from three in Gurgaon to two in Delhi because of the difficulty in fleeing in the Gurgaon incident.

Three motorcycle-borne men had arrived on a Pulsar motorcycle, the same brand
used in the Delhi heist, and made away with Rs 10 lakh being transferred into an ATM kiosk in Gurgaon’s Palam Vihar area on Wednesday.

They had fired three rounds at a security guard, critically injuring him.

Empty suitcase
The suitcase containing the money was recovered from near a petrol pump, some hours after the robbery.

Sources said that an empty suitcase, believed to be containing Rs 1.5 crore robbed from Kamla Market, has been recovered from another area.

It is also being probed if a back-up team was waiting some distance away on another motorcycle to step in if things went out of control.

“The robbers were in constant danger of being caught in a crowded area. These appear to be professional robbers and we are looking into the possibility of them having a back-up team nearby,” said an officer.

So far, no concrete breakthrough has been achieved in the heist, said police. Five persons with criminal backgrounds have been detained, their involvement in the crime has not been established yet. Their identities have not been revealed either.

Police are also scanning the details of the criminals who have been released from jails in Delhi and NCR over the last three months.

About a dozen teams have been formed to crack the case. Sources said policemen have been told by their seniors that anyone who helps crack the case would be in for a quick promotion.

Police have so far questioned over a hundred people, most of them being current and ex-employees of the security management company involved in the transfer of the cash.
