Last Updated 02 December 2014, 18:00 IST

Weavers from across the State have sought Textiles Minister Baburao Chinchansur’s intervention to get necessary approval from Urban Development Department (UDD) for operating power looms in urban areas in the State, including Bengaluru City.

At a meeting of various associations of weavers convened by Chinchansur at Vidhana Soudha, they complained that UDD and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) were neither allowing operation of existing power looms nor according permission to start new ones in urban areas citing noise pollution.

Sanctioned looms

Subsequent governments have so far sanctioned 20,000 power looms at subsidised rate under various schemes.

But none of them have been able to start operations due to objections by UDD and KSPCB, they said.

Assuring he would take up their problems with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Chinchansur said he would place their give demands before the chief minister. Increasing grant for weavers’ welfare package from Rs 20 crore to Rs 100 crore is one of them.
