Converting a house to a home

Last Updated 07 December 2014, 14:18 IST

Tara Khan, juggles through different roles, from being a mother, wife, design nerd and a travel nomad at heart. Having completed her higher education from Chennai, she moved to the United States to pursue her further studies but her passion always lay in designing and decorating homes.

Tara decided to transform her passion into her entrepreneurial project, ‘A Little Bit of Fabulous’ (LBOF), which is a concept store that thrives on converting a house to a home to bring about a relaxing feeling for people to live in. The idea of starting a store came to Tara’s mind once she returned to India, after living abroad for 14 years. She wanted to replicate a similar kind of home of that she had lived in abroad, for her daughter here.

However, when she realised that the prices of interior products varied drastically a both countries, she decided to manufacture high-class products like that of US. ‘LBOF’ is a happy place where one can get their daily dose of products. The store itself evokes a peppy feeling with its bright colours. We believe that luxury should be a feeling rather than a price tag.” she says.

‘LBOF’ offers unusual gifts in whimsical prints and breathtaking colours in abundance. It has a minimalist approach to design, yet their products are stylish and elegant.

The store has products, including couches, books, photo frames, showpieces and kitchen ware. Theme-based designs like vintage chests to decorate the bed room and old telephones are also available. In the gifting section, the store offers quirky items like opener, a door-stopper which are designed like women’s shoes; pens and books. There is something in it for all!

While most of the products are in-house certain products which are outsourced from US and UK too, especially the wall clocks designed by Jonathan Adler, a designer from New York, which Tara believes has a strong influence on her.

Tara’s main intention was to bring in a character to a mundane product which people use on a daily basis to make homes a happy and relaxing place to live in. Besides being tied up with her solo entrepreneurial project, Tara loves travelling, “Everybody would love to escape from their daily humdrum of life into a different space. The more I travel, the more I realise how little I have seen. You realise what a miniscule part of the world you really are. It’s humbling,” says Tara.
