A 34-year-old man who allegedly masterminded a Rs 40 lakh heist in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden in July this year has been arrested. Police said Rs 40,000 recovered from him was a part of the robbed money.

About half-a-dozen men had arrived in a car and on motorcycles to rob the staff of Kwality Walls, a company dealing in frozen desserts. The robbers had information that the company staff were involved in regularly depositing large amounts of money to a bank.

They planned a heist and on July 12, their car intercepted the company car, forcing it to come to a halt. One of them opened fire to prevent any resistance while another robber snatched a bag containing Rs 40 lakh.

But as they fled, the company staff decided to challenge them and chased their car. “The driver even managed to hit the robbers’ car from the rear side. But the robbers abandoned their car and escaped on four motorcycles,” said police in a release on Sunday.

A case was registered at Rajouri Garden police station and investigations taken up by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. Information was received on Saturday that the mastermind Gurpal Singh would come to Dwarka to meet one of his friends. A trap was laid and Singh arrested.

Police said soon after the robbery, Singh had first escaped to Punjab with his family to evade arrest and then to Mumbai.
