Two girls allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well in Chandakapura village in Basavakalyan taluk, Bidar, on Sunday night, alleging harassment by two boys.

Their bodies were recovered on Monday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Sunitha Jadav (18) and Saraswati Suryavanshi (20). A suicide note reportedly written by the girls was found near the well, said the police.

The note said that they decided to end their lives because they were being harassed by Balu and Vikas, residents of the village, the police added. According to the police, the girls had gone to the outskirts of the village in the evening and never returned.

Worried relatives searched for them and found their footwear and the suicide note by the well, the police said.

As the water level in the well was high, the villagers were unable to recover the bodies  on Sunday night. The bodies were removed after pumping out the water the next morning, the police said. Sunitha’s father Panduranga Jadav is said to have registered a complaint with the Basavakalyan police after finding the death note.

Both the girls had studied till Class 10. The police said Saraswati, who hailed from Malegaon village in Maharashtra, had been living with her relatives in the village for the past few months. “Investigation has begun. Nobody has been brought in for questioning yet,” said Sub-inspector Srinivas Allapure.
