Modi making hollow promises: Sonia

Congress chief also takes a dig at Omar Abdullah over flood relief disbursal

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for neglecting flood victims of Jammu and Kashmir, and alleged that Modi was least concerned about their plight.

“I am not here to do politics over your tragedy. The majority of people here are homeless and are craving for shelter. But it is a fact that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has only been making hollow promises to the flood victims and indulging in only rhetoric,” Sonia said at a poll rally in Shangus constituency, Anantnag district.

Flanked by AICC general secretary Ambika Soni and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, she said: “The BJP and Modi came up with a long list of promise about the relief and rehabilitation of flood victims but they all proved to be hollow and on ground the things are quite in contrast. You have been left in the lurch and he (Modi) is least concerned about your grief.”

Sonia said that even the state government’s demanded for Central assistance has not been approved.

Admitting that coalition governments become inevitable at times, Sonia said: “It is true that we were not able to deliver what we could have in a coalition set up. But to keep communal forces at bay and to safeguard the secular fabric of the state and Kashmiriyat the collation becomes necessary at times.”

Alleging that the BJP thrives on the politics of communalism, hatred and polarisation, Sonia appealed to the people to maintain the secular character of the state and for that she urged them to vote for the Congress. “Give us the absolute mandate and allow us to form a government which will work on principles,” Sonia appealed.

Taking a dig at Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government, the Congress chief said: “When Ghulam Nabi Azad was chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, the state witnessed an earthquake. The relief work was faster than what is being done after floods.”
