Untimely rain leaves farmers worried

A few districts in the State continued to receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday too. Sugarcane, paddy, coffee and ragi crops have been badly affected in these regions and a canal breach has been reported in Mandya district.

Sugarcane and paddy crops in over 50 acres of land were inundated due to a breach in the Visvesvaraya Distribution Canal near Chikkabyadarahalli, in Pandavapura taluk, Mandya district, following heavy rainfall on Wednesday night.

Farmers in Hirisave in Hassan district and neighbouring villages are a worried lot as the ragi crop — both harvested and ready-for-harvesting crops — have been damaged due to heavy rains which lashed on Wednesday night. Paddy and coffee crops at Sakleshpur taluk in Hassan district are badly affected due to the continuous drizzling since Tuesday evening.

In Kodagu

Untimely rainfall on Wednesday night has damaged paddy crops at Napoklu in Kodagu district. Normally farmers harvest paddy only after the Hutari festival. A few farmers had completed harvest on Wednesday. Due to dank weather on Thursday, farmers could not dry the wet paddy. Farmers in Ramakunja, Dakshina Kannada district have incurred loss due to heavy rainfall, coupled with lightning and thunder that lashed their region on Wednesday night.

Over a 100 arecanut and coconut trees were uprooted. Power and telephone lines were snapped in the region and the total loss is estimated at Rs 25,000. It drizzled for sometime at Mangaluru in the morning. The sky remained overcast throughout the day.

In Shivamogga

It drizzled in several parts of Shivamogga district for most part of the day affecting harvesting activities on Thursday.

Though dank weather had been prevailing over the district for the past two days, it began drizzling on Wednesday night. Hosanagar, Ripponpet, Shivamogga, Bhadravathi, Sagar, parts of Sorab, Thirthahalli, Shikaripur received untimely showers. It rained for an hour at Sirsi in Uttara Kannada.
