A report on “glorification” of Mahatma Gandhi assassin Nathuram Godse rocked the Rajya Sabha on Thursday with the Opposition blaming the BJP-led Centre for the development. While the government distanced itself for it, a BJP MP added fuel to the fire by describing Godse as a patriot.
In the zero hour, Opposition members waved newspapers to draw attention to the report on a meeting to mark Godse’s birthday organised by some religious leaders and former legislators. Congress MP Husain Dalwai said he wrote to the Maharashtra chief minister in protest.
“Mahatma Gandhi’s killer is being eulogised by hosting ‘Shaurya Diwas’ (bravery day) in Maharashtra on his birthday. These people talk of development, but are trying to create a rift in society,” said Dalwai, triggering angry reactions from the opposition.
