In the pin weight (46kg) pre-quarters, Sandeep out-scored Lithuanian Kestutis Pukas, forcing the referee to stop the contest in the second round. Sandeep will now take on Belarussian Aliaksei Hohleu, who defeated Hungary’s Zoltan Szeirtes 11-1 in another pre-quarterfinal bout.
Gaurav Bhiduri (48kg) had an equally easy outing against Freddie Ortiz of Puerto Rico. The Indian got the better of his rival 7-2 in the low-scoring contest. Gaurav will square off against Kazakhstan’s Bagdat Uaidayev, who registered a sensational knock-out victory over Alexandros Tsanikidis of Greece. The Kazakh was trailing 3-5 in the second round when he landed a knock-out punch to clinch the bout.
Namit Bahadur, meanwhile, came from behind to beat Israel’s Viktor Barak in the fly weight (50kg) category. Namit will take on Turkey’s Bulut Haykir, who out-punched Bulgaria’s Orhan Hyuseinov 25-3.
