A 45-year-old Delhi Police head constable suffered serious head injuries after a speeding car driven by an inebriated youth hit him at a police checkpoint near east Delhi’s Akshardham Temple on Saturday.

Police said the accident took place around 1 am when the head constable along with his team was checking vehicles after  barricading the road near Akshardham Temple.

“Raghu Nandan is undergoing treatment at Max Hospital in east Delhi’s Patparganj,” said a police officer.

The driver, 22-year-old Sidhant Kashyap, was caught at the accident spot.A case of rash and negligent driving and drink driving was registered against him. He was arrested and later released on bail.

The FIR was registered on the complaint of Constable Mukesh Kumar who was there with Raghu and home guard jawan Ashok.

Around 1 am, the head constable and the home guard jawan were checking a vehicle when they spotted a Renault Duster coming from the Sarai Kale Khan side at a high speed.

They signalled the driver to stop for checking, but the driver did not slow down and hit Raghu before ramming into the barricades. He was dragged by the vehicle for some distance while the other two managed to jump out of the way.

Immediately, Mukesh and Ashok caught the driver, who was with his friend Manish. Both were heavily drunk. Police confiscated empty bottles from the car.

A call was made to the police control room and Raghu was rushed to hospital. Kashyap is a resident of east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar and his family runs a garment business.

Raghu was posted to Pandav Nagar police station four days ago and this was his second day on duty. He stays with his family in northeast Delhi’s Gokulpuri.

The latest accident comes less than a week after two policemen were killed and another was injured after being hit by a Maruti Eeco at a police checkpoint in south Delhi’s Jaitpur.

On Thursday, a 55-year-old Delhi Police sub-inspector was also killed after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding truck in outer Delhi’s Alipur.
