It’s the end of the year again! And in Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve, one would normally see a rush of people trying to obtain tickets for a gala event. Long lines outside the most popular bars and pubs and a huddle of people trying to make reservations to the best of hotels will be a common site in the coming days.

If you are one of those unfortunate ones who didn’t have enough time to scrimmage for overpriced tickets or stand in queue for hours, worry not, there is always a house party (or two) in every neighbourhood. Although more reasonably priced, this is just as much fun and something many youngsters are opting for.

There are many ways you can go about organising a house party.

Gautham Ramachandran recalls fondly the New Year’s celebrations at his previous residence in Domlur. “In 2011, I had one of the most memorable New Year’s celebrations. That night, my friends and I gathered ingredients and set up a barbecue grill on the top floor corridor. I’m pretty sure that it was the first time any of us had put in so much effort for a party. The night turned out to be amazing,” said Gautham.

Rohan Subramaniun, a techie, has spent many New Year’s Eve partying at home. He says, “It’s a lot cheaper than having to pay a massive cover charge at most parties. You get to create a party that suits you with the people you want to be with.”

House parties can be very innovative as you can use many tricks to make the party a little more fun. Pranav Aditya, a musician, prefers the idea of a potluck dinner, where each guest brings in one dish to the party, hence making a meal with lots of variety.

But not everyone is under the impression that a house party will lessen the burden on one’s wallet. Pranav adds how house parties don’t make his wallet thinner. However, he doesn’t mind throwing one for his close friends and family.

“On New Year’s Eve, literally every club or restaurant is the king, the public just want to countdown the New Year at a memorable event. It’s one of those days which you just do not want to do something you would do every other day of the week. House parties are epic, simply because you control the guest list. You are the caterer and even the DJ and the entertainer. You don’t have to worry about things going out of hand at a house party simply because you are already at home to begin with!”

So if you are still pondering over what to do on New Year’s Eve, why not give house party a chance?
