Leopard found dead, trapped in fencing wire

A five-year-old female leopard was found dead near a tank at Martur village in the taluk here on Friday night.

Forest department officials said the wild cat may have died due to suffocation after being trapped in a fencing wire. It may have got trapped while going to the tank to drink water, officials added.

‘Not natural death’

“This is not a natural death. It looks like villagers have plotted this after the same leopard killed a cow last week in Gamategatta near Iduvani village, said P P Byanerjee, Deputy Conservator of Forests.

A case will be booked, he said, adding that all efforts are being taken to identify those responsible for the death of the leopard.

Assistant conservator of forests Venkatesh, range forest officer Nanjudappa and other officials visited the spot on Saturday morning.

A team of veterinary doctors headed by Sudhir Gowda conducted the post mortem. The carcass was burnt near the tank.
