Guilt and goodness

Many of us, at various times, at various places, over various things, in various degrees, would have found ourselves being glutted with guilt pangs. Like, for instance, if you are a high-flying career person, also an extravagantly doting parent, you may often find yourself being scourged by spasms of guilt over your insufficiency in giving your full-time attention to your family.

Or, if you are a perfectionist, doing your professional work with pinpoint precision, then working in a perfunctory manner, at times, owing to paucity of time, may make you being persecuted with paroxysms of guilt. Or, if you are a good teacher, working with irreproachable sincerity, then not delivering the goods due to some unforeseen snag may see you being buffeted by guilt blows.

Interestingly, these feelings of guilt somewhat coexist with goodness factor in humans. Especially, if you are someone with lofty principles and ideologies, the more would be the chances of you getting harried by guilt assaults. One can’t refute the veracity in the above statement, when we look at instances involving those criminals, totally bereft of guilt, responsible for reprehensible crimes like carnages, pogroms and such other mass killings.

In fact, we can even consider the cases of scamsters, smugglers, suicide bombers, burglars, rapists, recidivists, desperados and other miscreants. These diabolical-minded folks, diving into deplorable and dastardly activities, with neither scintilla of guilt, nor smidgen of qualms or compunctions. Self-centreed children, too, deserting their aged parents, who’d have cocooned them in comforts during their childhood days. Or, we can consider those malicious-minded machinating folks at workplaces, who try blocking others’ success to highlight their own qualities. Apparently, in all these aforesaid cases, the vicious minds are so saturated with virulent thoughts that there’d be no space left for guilt feelings.

But if at all, one is capable of feeling that guilt, it’s indeed a great bliss in itself. Since, these guilt feelings are more like a torch-bearer, a guiding force, a cautioning factor, which keeps alerting us, when we’d have swerved from the right track of our moral life. At times, we keep getting gnawed by guilt pangs over insignificant issues, too.

These volatile guilt feelings over trifle things can be overlooked, as they hover only for fleeting moments.But there are those nagging guilts that tenaciously keep hounding us all through. Here, the guilt alert is more like a clarion call, wherein you are required to recheck, revise, redefine and redress your acts and attitude, which are generating those guilt bouts. In case, you choose to ignore these guilt onslaughts, then chances are that it may consume you, by corroding your peace and happiness, and causing irrevocable damages for lifetime.
