Global coffee exports dip 7.8 pc in Oct-Nov; India's up 20 pc

The coffee year runs from October to September. One bag contains 60 kg of the commodity.  "Exports during October-November period of the 2009-10 coffee year have decreased 7.8 per cent to 13.4 million bags compared to 14.5 million bags in the same period last coffee year," the ICO has said in a statement.

Global coffee export figures remained bleak due to a sharp fall in shipments from Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer. During the October-November period, overseas sale of coffee bean from Brazil dipped 11.11 per cent to 5.34 million bags from 6.01 million bags in the corresponding period last year.

Similarly, shipments from Colombia also declined to 1.15 million bags from 1.75 million bags, ICO data showed. But exports from other leading exporting nations such as Vietnam, Indonesia and India remained firm, it said. According to the ICO, India's coffee exports shot up 20.5 per cent to 5.16 lakh bags from 4.28 lakh bags in the first two months of the current crop year.

Even Vietnam's coffee exports rose to 1.87 million kg from 1.62 million kg and Indonesia's shipment firmed up to 9.85 lakh bags from 9.01 lakh bags in the review period, it said.
