Modi plays regional card in Delhi

Delhi polls: Prime Minister also takes a swipe at Congress, AAP
Last Updated 01 February 2015, 19:23 IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attempted to connect to Poorvanchalis in Dwarka in the city on Sunday by claiming that he was one of them because he was elected from Varanasi.

“I am a Poorvanchali as I am an MP from Varanasi, which has a sizeable Poorvanchali population. I am here because I want to serve the community,” he said at a rally in Dwarka on Sunday. “Let me tell you that I am also an original Dwarkawasi,” added Modi, referring to the Dwarka district in Gujarat.

The prime minister appealed to the people to bring the BJP to power if they want to see development in Delhi at par with other states across the country.  “Please see the track record of BJP-ruled states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and then decide which party to vote for,” he said.

Without naming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Modi warned the electorate “not to vote for the party which only knows to sit on dharnas”. He also lashed out at the Congress, saying: “Two political parties that are contesting the elections had joined hands behind the curtains to form government last year, and in these Assembly elections they have started slinging mud at each other.

“Their sole purpose is to be in news. They will say something sensational about each other to be on television 24-7. That's all they can do—tell lies and sit on dharnas.”

The prime minister said Delhi needs a sensible and responsible government, “a government that can address the problems here, like adequate water supply”.

“Previous government in Delhi played politics over the issue of sharing water with Haryana,” he added. “During the UPA regime, there was no coordination between the Congress government in Delhi and Congress government in Haryana. Thus, they could not address the water crisis here in Dwarka,” said Modi.

Now, the Central government in coordination with the Haryana government will solve Delhi’s water woes, he added.

“I feel lucky to have got the support of so many people in the national capital. Delhi has given me seven MPs. Now I want poorna bahumat (full majority). If that happens, what else do I need?” said Modi.

He added that the panacea for all problems was development. “If there is development, jobs will be created and more children can go to schools. People have supported me to form government. Now it’s my time to pay it back to you with interest. I have to carry out development,” said Modi.

“Have you ever seen a poor person in a bank or with a bank account? We have made it a reality with our Jan Dhan Yojana. We have given the poor access to banks,” he added. “So vote for the BJP and bring the party to power with full majority in Delhi too.”

Chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, Delhi BJP head Satish Upadhyay, chairman of the Standing Committee of the South Corporation Subhash Arya attend the rally.
